Heritage Open Days - Nurse Catherine Pine Talk

Discover the incredible story of Nurse Catherine Pine and how she is intertwined with the fight for women’s suffrage. This themed talk will allow visitors to learn about the research process and discuss how small archival pieces can be so important! It will explore how to read resources from both online and in-person archives. Some of the archives we used during our research were the British Journal of Nursing, Women’s Library LSE, and National Archives.

This talk was created to accompany our temporary exhibition In Focus: Nurse Catherine Pine which is only on display until Sunday 4th October. The exhibition is also displaying for the first time ever in the UK, Nurse Pine’s medal that was awarded to her for her work. Having gone missing in the 1950s, the medal was rediscovered in 2023 by Dr Hope Elizabeth May. Dr May subsequently acquired the medal and has kindly loaned it to the museum.

Visitors attending this event will have a chance to explore the whole museum and will have access to a cash / card bar on site.

Museum Open Time: 5:15pm

Talk Time: 6:30pm

Museum Closes: 8:00pm

About the speaker: Hedvig is a former placement student at our museum from The University of Westminster where she is earning her degree in Museums, Galleries, and Contemporary Culture. She has been with the Florence Nightingale Museum for 6 months and has been heavily involved with the research and creation of our newest temporary exhibition, In Focus: Nurse Catherine Pine.

She is very knowledgeable about Pine, her medal, and will be able to showcase how to extract useful data from seemingly small documents located within archives.
