Christmas Wild Life Drawing: Florence's Owls

When: Thursday 3rd December

Doors Open: 6:00pm Class Begins: 7:00pm Class Ends: 9:00pm

Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing, but did you know she also pioneered animal therapy? Understanding the importance of nature in the healing process, Florence introduced her patients to ward pets and strongly advocated the benefits of companion animals. Whilst in Greece Florence famously rescued a little owlet, nursed it back to health and named it Athena. This loyal bird accompanied Florence on her rounds and could often be found in her gown pocket or perched on her bookshelf.

Join us to celebrate Florence, Athena and the rise in animal assisted therapy with a Wild Life Drawing class. After a brief summary of the story of Athena the Owl and exploration of the museum we will sit down to sketch three amazing owls, including Minerva the little owl, Archemedies the tawny owl and Ludia the Barn Owl. As we draw we will learn about these amazing birds from the experts, understanding their habitats, hunting techniques and how the wild populations are faring.

Our inclusive and supportive classes are open to all ability levels, especially beginners! This class will be taught by artist Jennie Webber who will guide you through the process of drawing from life with live demos and top tips. No prior art experience is needed to join the session; so whether you’re a dab hand or haven't picked up a pencil for years, we are confident that with a bit of creative guidance from Jennie, you'll get loads out of the experience.

We will provide a range of art materials, paper and drawing boards for you to use, so no need to bring anything along, but if you have some trusty favourites that you enjoy using you’re welcome to bring them.

Animal welfare is at the heart of everything we do at Wild Life Drawing. We are a small team of animal lovers who are dedicated to conservation, and we strive to make each of our classes a positive experience for the animals we draw. We only ever work with the finest sanctuaries and organisations who treat their animals with respect and care, and healthy animals that are happy being around humans. The handler who is bringing along these owls is highly skilled and has worked with birds of prey for many years. He is involved with several breeding programmes to conserve endangered species, and regularly rescues and rehabilitates birds in need.

*Children under the age of 7 will not be admitted into this session. All children over the age of 7 will still need to purchase their own ticket and must be accompanied by an adult.

10% of profits will be donated to The Barn Owl Trust

Bar serving festive mulled wine and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available throughout the event.
